DIVE SITES

North Wall
Location: 1.5 nautical miles Northeast of Silk Caye
Depth: 40-100 feet/12-30mt
Access: Boat

Undoubtedly one of the premier dive sites, this location offers an unparalleled glimpse into the wonders of the Belize Barrier Reef. Here, you'll encounter a thriving marine ecosystem that boasts remarkable sightings, including massive black groupers, graceful hawksbill turtles, majestic spotted eagle rays, both green and spotted moray eels, and the mesmerizing schools of horse-eye jack and schoolmasters. On occasion, fortunate divers may even spot reef sharks, manta rays and the awe-inspiring presence of a whale shark cruising in the expansive blue waters. This exhilarating dive experience typically unfolds as a multi-level adventure, commencing at 80 feet (24 meters) along the wall and gradually ascending to the vibrant reef crest at approximately 40 feet (12 meters), ensuring an exploration of the full spectrum of marine life.

White Hole
Location: One nautical mile northeast of Silk Caye

Commencing at a depth of 30 feet (10 meters) on a sandy bottom resembling a pristine white expanse from the surface, the White Hole unveils a rich underwater world with historical ties to local fishermen. Abundant marine life flourishes here, particularly in the 60 feet (18 meters) range, where schools of yellowtail and dogtooth snappers, diverse grouper species, and various commercially valuable fish species thrive. In the sandy areas intermingled with coral patches, one can frequently spot graceful stingrays, elusive moray eels, and tranquil nurse sharks taking refuge. The underwater landscape gradually slopes towards the outer coral wall at around 70 feet (21 meters) before plunging steeply into the abyssal depths of the ocean, revealing an awe-inspiring underwater topography. Keep a keen eye out for the majestic spotted eagle rays gracefully gliding through the blue waters, adding to the enchantment of this dive.

Turtle Canyons
Location: Two nautical miles northeast of Silk Caye
Depth: 40-60 feet/12-18mt

Located just north of the northern wall, Turtle Canyons offers an abundance of underwater wonders for a rewarding second dive. The canyons, gently sloping down to approximately 60 feet (18 meters), serve as ideal resting places for hawksbill and loggerhead turtles. This dive site is a paradise for macro-photographers seeking to capture the intricate beauty of smaller juvenile species such as spotted drums, cleaner shrimps, and arrow crabs. Interestingly, recent sightings of lionfish in this area suggest they may be attracted by the presence of these juvenile species. The entire dive experience unfolds within and around these captivating canyons, at depths ranging from 50 to 60 feet (15-18 meters), promising an engaging and visually captivating underwater adventure.
Turtle Alley
Turtle Alley offers a captivating snorkeling experience where you can snorkel alongside gentle sea turtles, graceful nurse sharks, and elegant rays. This underwater paradise is not only a haven for these magnificent creatures but also a spot where local fishermen clean their catch, drawing the attention of turtles, nurse sharks, and rays to the area. It's a unique blend of natural wonder and local culture, making Turtle Alley a must-do spot for snorkelers seeking encounters with both marine life and the traditions of Belizean fishermen.

SILK CAYE EXPANSION PROJECT
Silk Caye faced severe erosion, nearly vanishing due to the relentless forces of nature. The community of Placencia rallied together in collaboration with Mr. Eworth Garbutt, demonstrating remarkable determination and dedication to preserving Silk Caye, one of Placencia's most beloved destinations. Through their combined efforts, they implemented sustainable conservation measures to safeguard this fragile paradise, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty and marine wonders.
