GLADDEN SPIT
Gladden Spit stands out as a unique and renowned destination for encountering Whale Sharks from April to June. What sets the experience apart from other countries is its distinct combination of factors: the annual aggregation of whale sharks drawn by the mass spawning of snapper species, the proximity of the dive sites to the surface, and the dedicated conservation efforts to protect both the marine life and the visitors. This unique confluence of natural events and responsible tourism practices makes Gladden Spit a premier location for ethically experiencing and preserving encounters with the world's largest fish.

Located 26 nautical miles from Placencia, the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve serves as a vital spawning aggregation site for various tropical fish species, including the cubera, mutton, and dog snappers, collectively producing substantial amounts of spawn. This remarkable phenomenon occurs between the full moon and last quarter phases from March to June, attracting the awe-inspiring presence of the Whale Shark to Gladden Spit. These gentle giants, the largest fish in the ocean, can reach lengths of up to 60 feet (18 meters). Divers and snorkelers are granted a rare opportunity to swim alongside these magnificent creatures. The underwater landscape here features a gradual slope that descends to 160 feet (50 meters), eventually plunging into the deep blue abyss. Diving is conducted in mid-water at a maximum depth of 60 feet (18 meters), with small groups of no more than 12 divers accompanied by their experienced dive masters. Stringent safety measures are adhered to during this dive to ensure the well-being of both divers and the whale sharks. For snorkelers, the opportunity to witness these incredible creatures in action is equally promising, as the whale sharks often surface to feed, providing an unforgettable experience in open water.
